The Cheer for Children Program provides education and mentorship opportunities to children who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. This partnership between the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) and the University Medical Center (UMC) enables firefighters, public safety educators, child life specialists, and volunteers to provide positive experiences for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients.
This program provides life safety education to hospitalized children and their families. The visits provide one-on-one interaction with TFD firefighters and allow families to participate in engaging injury prevention activities together. Children are given the chance to have a positive interaction with first responders in a non-emergency situation.
In addition to activity books, badges and other educational materials, children and their families are given the opportunity to see an engine and take a tour of a fire station when they are able.
