Archer Center History
|
|
The area surrounding the Fred Archer Neighborhood Center was first settled in the 1930’s & 1940’s by African American homesteaders. Since 1963, the dream of many of the "A" Mountain residents was to have a center that would offer the neighborhood full recreational facilities. Many local residents wanted something new, something exciting, which everyone could savor – a neighborhood recreation center.
The goal for the neighborhood center was to provide social and recreational experiences to the public, primarily residents of the general area.
The "A" Mountain Neighborhood Center was completed in September of 1978. Now known as the Fred Archer Neighborhood Center (named after its first director, Fred Archer), the recreational facility offers valuable programs, which target specific needs in the immediate community.
Agencies currently housed out of the center include the Henry Ryan Learning Center, Southwest Midwifery, Planned Parenthood and USDA Rural Housing.
