Recovery & American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Tucson Has Received Nearly $120 Million in Stimulus Money

In a little more than a year since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was signed into law, the City of Tucson has been awarded $119,610,987 in stimulus money. This funding has helped fill some of the gaps caused by the national economic downturn.

One requirement of ARRA is that funds be spent quickly in order to generate economic activity. The City created this website in 2009 to help residents understand which grants we pursued, how much money we received, and how that money is being spent to make Tucson a better place. It should be noted also that there are strict parameters on the use of ARRA funds.

Legislation is being considered for another round of stimulus funding to states and cities. More information will be posted on this page as it becomes available.

We've done more updates to some of the information on this website, including the list of links to government agencies that may be offering opportunities for stimulus grant funding. In addition, if you have a local Community Success Story, please send us your information (through the Contact Us link) and we will add it to our postings.

The City of Tucson has been awarded $63,000,000 in federal funding for its Modern Streetcar Project.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood made the official announcement on Thursday, February 18, at 10 a.m. at the Historic Train Depot at Pastor Plaza, 400 E. Toole Ave. LaHood was joined by U.S. Congressional Representatives Raúl Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords and Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup.

The Tucson Modern Streetcar will be a 3.9-mile, fixed-rail transit system that will connect the Arizona Health Sciences Center, The University of Arizona, Main Gate Square, 4th Avenue Shopping District, Congress Shopping and Entertainment District, and the Mercado District. More than 100,000 people live and work within a half-mile of its route.

Streetcar project funding comes from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The City of Tucson was among 1,400 national TIGER applicants and the grant amount is the fifth-highest in the nation.

To date, the City has received $119.3 M in stimulus funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. For more information:
