The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $4.2 million to the City of Tucson in Recovery Act funding under HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization Program 2 (NSP2).
The City's Housing and Community Development Department will use the money to purchase about 70 single-family foreclosed homes for rehabilitation, resale and rental with the NSP2 funds. Homes in high foreclosure targeted areas within the city limits will be rehabilitated and made as environmentally-friendly as possible.
"Arizona has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation. With NSP1 & 2, we will be able to purchase over 100 homes that would have otherwise probably gone unoccupied. This helps Tucson and its neighborhoods,” said Ron Whitman, a Project Supervisor who worked on the application process.
Since 2009, the City has purchased between 45 and 50 homes with the NSP1 grant . About 75 percent of these homes will be purchased by low-income families and 25 percent will be rental homes for very low-income families. “All buyers are required to participate in pre-purchasing counseling and debt management,” said Whitman.
Pima County was awarded $22.1 million in grant money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This sum includes the $4.2 million awarded to the City. To date, the City has received $56.3 million in ARRA funds.
The NSP2 grants announced late last week are part of $2 billion awarded nationwide to combat the effects of vacant and abandoned homes while creating jobs.
