Streetcar Desired is Now Wish Come True

The City of Tucson has been awarded $63,000,000 in federal funding for its Modern Streetcar Project.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood made the official announcement on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Historic Train Depot at Pastor Plaza, 400 E. Toole Ave. LaHood was joined by U.S. Congressional Representatives Raúl Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords and Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup.

The Tucson Modern Streetcar will be a 3.9-mile, fixed-rail transit system that will connect the Arizona Health Sciences Center, The University of Arizona, Main Gate Square, 4th Avenue Shopping District, Congress Shopping and Entertainment District, and the Mercado District. More than 100,000 people live and work within a half-mile of its route.

Streetcar project funding comes from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The City of Tucson was among 1,400 national TIGER applicants and the grant amount is the fifth-highest in the nation.

To date, the City has received $119.3 M in stimulus funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
