The Sun Link Tucson Streetcar project team has completed the installation of track along Congress Street from Church Avenue to Granada Avenue. As of Thursday, May 9, 2013, all of Congress Street is open to at least one travel lane. Crews will continue work on the installation of signals, the overhead contact system (electrical) and sidewalks. The final layer of asphalt will be placed later this summer.
Joe Chase, TDOT project manager and the project team are excited about opening this section of roadway. Chase said, "It's a pretty big milestone for the project and achieves the eighty-percent completion mark for track installation along the entire project." Chase added, "In addition to rail being completed on Congress Street, all of Fourth Avenue, University Boulevard, Park Avenue and Second Street are complete. To date, the team has installed 34,475 linear feet of track."
This is a project of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). The voter-approved, $2.1 billion RTA plan will be implemented through 2026. Details about the full plan are available at www.RTAmobility.com.
The RTA has a nine-member board with representatives from local, state and tribal governments. The modern streetcar project is co-managed by the City of Tucson and the RTA.
