On December 7, 2021, Mayor and Council adopted an amendment to the Unified Development code to allow Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), or casitas, in Tucson. 

What is a casita? These smaller units provide an independent living space on the same lot as a primary unit. They are a way of providing more flexible housing options that can help seniors age in place and support multi-generational living.

What do the new rules allow? The code amendment adopted by Mayor & Council allows:

Main Ave/Granada Ave Closure


On Monday, January 3, 2022, Borderland Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), is scheduled to close Main Avenue/Granada Avenue from St. Mary's Road to Speedway Boulevard. Residential and business access will be maintained between Speedway Boulevard and Fourth Street and a full closure will be in place from the Union Pacific Railroad Tracks (UPRR) south to St. Mary’s Road. This work is part of the Prop 101 Tucson Delivers Better Streets Project currently taking place.

Ward 5 Council Office Schedule

Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres and the Ward 5 staff want to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

The Ward 5 Council Office will be closed Thursday, December 30 and Friday, December 31 (observed by the City of Tucson).  The Ward 5 Council Office will reopen Monday, January 3, 2022.

City of Tucson Issues Annual Residential Rehabilitation Program Request for Proposals, Applications Due January 31st, 2022

The City of Tucson is seeking qualifications and proposals from not-for-profit organizations interested in providing Housing Rehabilitation Services funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.   

Proposals are due no later than 11:59pm Arizona time on January 31, 2022. Interested organizations are encouraged to download the request for proposals and apply by the deadline above. 

Traffic Alert Downtown Bowl Bash


On Thursday, December 30, 2021, beginning at 7 a.m., the following streets will be closed for the New Year’s Eve Downtown Bowl Bash:

  • Toole Avenue from Congress Street/Fourth Avenue to Pennington Street
  • Fifth Avenue from Congress Street to Toole Avenue

The road closures are scheduled to reopen for travel by 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2022.

Traffic Alert Grant Road and Orchard Avenue

On Saturday, December 18, 2021, Tucson Electrical Power Co. is scheduled to install new power lines at the Grant Road and Orchard Avenue intersection, just east of Columbus Boulevard. This utility work is part of the Grant Road Improvement Project Phase 3 & 4.

Work is scheduled to take place between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m., the same day. During this work, one travel lane will remain open in each direction for eastbound and westbound traffic on Grant Road. Officers will be on-site to direct travel through the intersection until the work is complete.
