SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL TUCSON(SRTS) programs encourage daily physical activity and the development of healthy habits in youth by promoting regular walking and biking to school. Walking and biking also reduces traffic congestion and pollution around schools, improves safety in school zones, and provides families and friends an opportunity to share time with each other and build connections in their community. SRTS Tucson is a program of Living Streets Alliance made possible by the City of Tucson Bicycle and Pedestrian Program.
EL GRUPO YOUTH SUMMER BIKE CAMP builds confidence, knowledge, and skills in a safe, fun and peer-led environment. Activities focus on developing safe-riding skills, mechanical knowledge, and bike handling for each skill level, as well as exposure to health and wellness, environmental stewardship, air quality issues, and recycled art through a series of hands-on experiences. The camp is designed for children ages 7-13.
BICYCLE / PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DIVERSION PROGRAM are offered for citations issued through the City of Tucson and Pima County Courts. The Court may dismiss civil traffic citations issued to bicyclists and pedestrians who complete the diversion program offered by the EZ AZ traffic school.
A GUIDE TO BIKING & WALKING FACILITIES
BIKE BOX | An intersection treatment that provides a designated space for people on bikes when stopped at an intersection. Bike Boxes are used to reduce conflict between bicyclists and motor vehicles and increase the visibility of people on bikes.
Tips for People Driving | When the traffic signal is yellow or red, drivers must stop behind the white stop line behind the green bike box. Don’t stop on top of the bike box. Keep it clear for people on bikes to use. When the light turns green, drivers and bicyclists may move through the intersection as usual, with people on bikes going first. After about 200 feet, the bike lane returns and you will be able to pass safely.
Tips for People Biking | When a traffic signal is yellow or red, enter the bike box from the approaching green bike lane. Stop before the crosswalk. If you are turning left, stay to the left inside the bike box. When the light is green, proceed as normal, being aware of approaching traffic and move to the right once through the intersection. The bike lane will resume about 200 feet south of the intersection.
