On Wednesday, we launched the Community Wireless Program to provide eligible residents free internet service. When the pandemic forced schools to close, many families worried about the lack of equipment needed to support remote learning, but also access to internet service. Through this program, families will receive free internet service so they can actively participate in remote learning and prevent our children from falling behind in school.
Application Period: December 9 – 21, 2020. One application per household.

When we instituted the mandatory curfew, we also approved an additional $6 million in aid to help our community. High demand for initial funding rounds allowed for community partners to back fill requests for aid. As a result, new application periods were not opened. I am glad those who initially applied and did not get aid will have the opportunity to be considered now that new funds are available.
Small Business Continuity Grants
The YWCA of Southern Arizona is currently accepting applications for Small Business Continuity Grants. The grants offer up to $10,000 to businesses that experienced a loss in earnings as a result of the pandemic. View all details and apply at ywcatucson.org.

December 12 marks the five-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement and despite the lack of climate leadership at the federal level, local leaders across the nation continue to fight for climate justice. I joined over one thousand leaders in signing the “America Is All In” multi-sector statement today to affirm our commitment to climate action.
I was also honored to receive the EV City Award for the Arizona Transportation Electrification Forum today, recognizing our team’s efforts. Our City team has done an outstanding job at pursuing the electrification of our bus fleet.

I want to close today’s newsletter with a reminder that COVID-19 cases continue to increase and Arizona currently has the highest rate of transmission . Pima County Health Department recently shared hospitals are near or at capacity, and nurses at Tucson Medical Center issued a letter earlier this week asking the community to rally behind them to reduce cases. We must do everything possible to slow the spread, including getting tested.
We’ve partnered with Rescue Me Wellness to offer free COVID-19 saliva testing at various locations. No appointment necessary. No health insurance required.
Remember, Pima County has several permanent testing locations and also offers pop-up testing at various locations. Test as often as you need to.
We need to slow the spread. Please stay home when possible, wear a mask and socially distance. Lives depend on it.
Somos Unos, Tucson. Talk to you soon.
