Paul's Note - April 8, 2022

Julius Holt, who was the long-time leader of Tucson Youth Football and an American Youth Football Hall of Famer, passed away Monday morning. 

I had some chats with him about how the city could work with TYF to make the program better for Tucson’s young athletes. His suggestions and help were a big part of the improvements we made to Jesse Owens Park, which have benefitted not only football players, but youth soccer as well. 

Event Road Closures - Downtown and Fourth Avenue

On Sunday, April 10, 2022, beginning at 5 a.m., the following streets will close to vehicular travel for events taking place in and around downtown.

Sixth Avenue from 12th Street to 13th Street, next to Armory Park, will close for the Rio Nuevo GABA Spring Bike Swap. Additionally, 12th Street and 13th Street will close from Sixth Avenue to Arizona Avenue. These roadways are scheduled to reopen by approximately 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Tugo Bike Share Free Ride Wednesdays

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), in partnership with Shift Transit, the longstanding Tugo Bike Share operating company, is excited to announce Free Ride Wednesdays during the month of April. Thanks to Tugo Bike Share’s partner, Tucson Electric Power (TEP), Tugo Bike Share riders will ride for free every Wednesday in the month of April. Riders can take out a bike at no cost, ride for as long as they wish, then return the bike to any station from 8am – 10pm on Wednesdays.

Road Closures - Fourth Avenue Street Fair and Tucson Folk Festival

The following road closures will be in place for the Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair and Tucson Folk Festival which both take place Friday, April 1, 2022, through Sunday, April 3, 2022.

Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair – Beginning Thursday, March 31, 2022, at approximately noon, Fourth Avenue will close south of University Boulevard to Eighth Street, with the exception of Sixth Street, for the 52nd Annual Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair.

Notice of Public Comment Period and Public Hearing City of Tucson Fiscal Year 2023 HUD Annual Action Plan

The City of Tucson seeks public comment and input related to its Fiscal Year 2023 HUD Annual Action Plan. The Annual Action Plan establishes policies and goals and serves as the City’s application for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Department annual entitlement funding through the Community Development Block Grant, Emergency Solutions Grant, HOME Investment Partnerships, and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Programs.

Traffic Signal Improvement Project - Broadway and Alvernon Way

On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, crews from Next Generation Electrical, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), are scheduled to convert the traffic signal heads to include flashing yellow arrows at the Broadway and Alvernon Way intersection.

Work will take place from about 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., the same day. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Cyclovia Traffic Alert

On Sunday, March 27, 2022, beginning at 6 a.m., the following streets will close to vehicular travel for Cyclovia Tucson.

  • Stone Avenue, south of Alameda Street to 18th Street
  • Meyer Avenue/Eighth Avenue from 18th Street to 37th Street
  • Fourth Avenue from 18th Street to 34th Street
  • 34th Street from Eighth Avenue to Fourth Avenue

Half-Staff Notification

In coordination with the Presidential proclamation, Governor Ducey has ordered flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset on March 27, 2022 to honor former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute.

Public Events at Cyclovia Tucson

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation & Mobility (DTM) is seeking public input on two scheduled transportation projects: The Church Avenue Complete Street Project and the 18th Street, 8th Avenue, and S. Campbell/Pinal Bicycle Boulevards. DTM staff invite the public to review preliminary design plans for each project, ask questions, share concerns, and provide the project design teams with suggestions.
