Building a pool? Here's what you need to know

Are you interested in building a swimming pool and live within the City of Tucson limits? The following is an overview of the requirements necessary when applying for a swimming pool permit.

General Requirements

The City of Tucson adopted the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and 2018 International Residential Code with amendments on January 1, 2019.  Along with the requirements of the Arizona Revised Statute 36-1681, those three documents show the current code reference on pool plans.

All engineers and architects involved in the design of the structure are to seal the related sheets of plans, details, and calculations in accordance with the rules of the State Board of Technical Registration.

Site Plan

  1. Show the pool surface area and location in relation to all existing structures on the property, 2018 ISPSC 105.3.
  2. Show compliance with the pool enclosure barrier requirement by including a continuous 5-foot barrier around the pool, ARS 36-1681.
  3. Show compliance with the pool barrier from a dwelling by including a UL 2017 listed pool alarm system for doors and windows open to the pool, or show a continuous barrier around the pool, 2018 ISPSC 305.4.1

Structural Plans

  1. Pool structures require a structural design by a registered engineer in the state of Arizona, R301.1.3.
  2. Include consideration of surcharge from the existing dwelling foundation when the pool is placed closer than the adjacent depth dimension.

Plumbing Plans

  1. Notate and specify all piping materials and equipment, P2608.
  2. Show gas pipe sizes in compliance with connected demand, G2413.3 & Table G2413.4(1).  Provide a gas line isometric or table for showing the BTU demand and length of line to each gas appliance.

Electrical Plans

  1. Use Table E3705.5.3 for sizing 15, 20 & 30 AMP branch circuit conductors and protection ratings.
  2. Use Table E3705.1, 60 degree C column, for sizing branch circuits and conductors rated at 100 AMP or less, E3705.4.1.
  3. Bond the perimeter surface and reinforcing steel as required by ISPSC 302.1 and NEC680.26(B)(2).
