With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid March 2020, Planning and Development Services made a full transition to online operations. Since that time, PDSD has managed to process, review, and issue 1,600 permits. Development in Tucson is still moving forward at a healthy pace. However, PDSD is currently experiencing a significant permitting backlog. To address the backlog, starting June 26, 2020 PDSD is transitioning to a more efficient method of operations:
PDSD will be moving away from the Virtual Service Counter to fully online operations through the PDSD Filedrop
PDSD has partnered with Pima County Development Services. Many of the simple permits that were previously handled at the Virtual Service Counter will be handled through this partnership in an expedited manner.
Once the permit backlog is reduced, PDSD anticipates there will be a significant improvement for all customers. The goal is to improve customer service and permitting time overall. PDSD will continue to evaluate its operations on an ongoing basis.
Applications will be processed in the order they were received, with priority given to projects that support public health and life safety. These practices are in line with those adopted by Pima County and other jurisdictions.
All applications will be submitted online using PDSD’s Filedrop. Applicants can use the PDSD web page to select the appropriate application for their request and utilize the submittal checklist to ensure they attach the required materials such as building plans, site plans and other drawings. This will help minimize processing time and ensure an application isn't rejected as incomplete.
Once the permit is created in the PDSD database, applicants will receive an activity number that can be used to track the status of their application in Property Research Online (PRO). When plans are under review, staff may reach out if there are any questions.
If you have an urgent need for a permit, for example an electrical or gas reconnect, or to make emergency repairs, please call (520) 791-5550 and press “8”. For all other questions, please visit PDSD Frequently Asked Questions to get your question answered or submit an inquiry.
