SIXTH AVENUE ASPHALT ART BLOCK PAINTING PARTY
CLOSURE OF SOUTH SIXTH AVENUE BETWEEN 12TH & 13TH STREETS
On Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., South Sixth Avenue between 12th and 13th streets will close to vehicular travel for the Sixth Avenue Asphalt Art event. The project will include painting a large, colorful mural spanning the center median accompanied by planters and flex posts to calm traffic, improve connectivity, and enhance safety and comfort for everyone using the street.
The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) and Living Streets Alliance invite the community to help beautify and transform Sixth Avenue with colorful murals, designed by Tucson artist Yu Yu Shiratori, and enjoy refreshments, music, and fun for all ages. The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Ready, Set, Rec! van will provide fun games for kids.
The event will take place on Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sixth Avenue between 12th Street and 13th Street by the Children’s Museum and Armory Park. Community volunteers will help paint a total of 7,000 square feet of roadway space. DTM will install two new crosswalks, create enhancements to existing crosswalks, and add a new mid-block crosswalk with ADA ramps to enhance safety.
The project will also reinforce connections between Children’s Museum Tucson, Armory Park Center, and neighboring businesses and residents.
This project is made possible in part through a Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative grant program, which responds to the growing number of cities around the world embracing art as an effective and relatively low-cost strategy to enliven and improve safety in their streets through interventions on crosswalks, plazas, and other transportation infrastructure. Tucson was one of 26 cities selected for the second round of this initiative.
“My gratitude goes to Bloomberg Philanthropies for selecting the City of Tucson as a recipient of the Asphalt Art Initiative grant award,” said Mayor Regina Romero. “This community-driven project to create murals and art-enhanced crosswalks will make the block around the Children’s Museum and Armory Park an even more vibrant destination for Tucsonans and tourists alike, while slowing down vehicle traffic and improving safety for people walking, biking, and using other modes of transportation.”

Motorists may expect delays in the area during the project. The traveling public should use caution when driving or bicycling in this area. CIERRE DE SUR SEXTA AVENIDA ENTRE CALLES 12 Y 13
El sábado 22 de octubre de 2022, de 8 a. m. a 6 p. m., la Sur Sexta Avenida entre las calles 12 y 13 cerrará el tránsito vehicular para el evento de Arte de Asfalto de la Sexta Avenida (Sixth Avenue Asphalt Art event). El proyecto incluirá pintar un mural grande y colorido que abarque la mediana central acompañado de jardineras y postes flexibles para calmar el tráfico, mejorar la conectividad y aumentar la seguridad y la comodidad de todos los que usan la calle.
El Departamento de Transporte y Movilidad de la Ciudad de Tucson (DTM) y Living Streets Alliance invitan a la comunidad a ayudar a embellecer y transformar la Sexta Avenida con murales coloridos, diseñados por el artista de Tucson Yu Yu Shiratori, y disfrute de refrescos, música y diversión para todas las edades. Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Tucson Ready, Set, Rec! van proporcionará juegos divertidos para niños.
El evento se llevará a cabo el sábado 22 de octubre, de 9 a. m. a 5 p. m., en la Sexta Avenida entre las calles 12 y 13 por el Museo de los Niños y el Parque Armory. Los voluntarios de la comunidad ayudarán a pintar un total de 7,000 pies cuadrados de espacio vial. DTM instalará dos nuevos cruces peatonales, creará mejoras en los cruces peatonales existentes y agregará un nuevo cruce peatonal a mitad de cuadra con rampas ADA para mejorar la seguridad.
