This project has been completed.
The project scope calls for bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Rita Road from the UPRR to Science Park Drive. Improvements include extending pedestrian/bicycle access across the Union Pacific railroad tracks, southbound lane reconstruction including installation of a 5' wide bicycle lane, installation of a southbound right-turn lane and traffic signal upgrades at the Rita Road and Science Park Drive intersection and new sidewalk installation north bound to fill in the existing "gap" area.
Pima County, who has hired Granite Construction Co., will lead the Harrison Greenway median work. They will be reducing a portion of the median island width north of the UPRR tracks to accommodate new bicycle lanes along the roadway. They will also install sidewalk improvements, provide lane restriping and cattle guard improvements north of the tracks for pedestrians and bicyclists, thus assisting with providing connection to the Greenway path located just south of the railroad tracks. This work is estimated to begin mid-May lasting into early June.
Union Pacific railroad will provide the needed track improvements to accommodate pedestrian/ bicycle access across them. This work will include installing new ties, ballast and flat panels. This work is currently expected to begin late June and is estimated to take from 5 to 10 days, at which time access across the tracks will be closed to thru traffic. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
The remainder of the work will be done by TDOT. This work will include the remainder of bicycle/pedestrian improvements needed south of the tracks to connect to the Greenway path along with the earlier described improvements such as the intersection work. We plan to have a contractor on board by early summer to do this work and take approximately 120 days to complete it.
