Paul's Note - April 28, 2023

Since 1990, Ward 2’s Udall Park has hosted concerts by Arizona Symphonic Winds conducted and directed by László Veres. This Spring, the Winds are ready to kick off their annual “Music in the Park” concert series on Saturday, May 13th. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets and enjoy an evening of great music for free.

May 13th - Marissa Olegario, professor at the Fox School of Music at the U of A here in Tucson is the featured soloist on her bassoon. The beautiful “My Yiddishe Momme” has been included as part of the Mother’s Day concert for the past 23 years. To keep that tradition going, Marissa will join László and his clarinet to present a duet rendition of that wonderful song honoring all mothers.

May 20th - Wonderful soprano Dori Cárdenas-Smith, DMA joins the Winds and will begin her program with one of the most beloved soprano arias “O mio babbino caro” by Puccini. You will also enjoy the music of Lehar and selections from The South Pacific and much more. László might even sing the “Father’s Lullaby” from the musical Chess.

May 27th - Memorial Day Weekend means that “John Philip Sousa” will guest conduct this concert. Violinist Michael Fan, long time concertmaster of the Tucson Pops will take the stage performing the beautiful “Meditation” from Thaïs. The Winds will also pay tribute to service members, past and present. László will join Mike to perform a short duet written by John Denman in memory of Paula Fan, one of Tucson’s most influential musicians who passed away recently.

This is the evening when we have the annual “Young Conductors on Stage with the Winds” inviting young people to come on stage and conduct the band.

June 3rd - Johanna Lundy, former principal hornist of the Tucson Symphony, and the current professor of horn at the Fox School of Music at the UA will display her virtuosity that you will not want to miss. The Winds’ own David Farneth teams up with Daniel Becker, DMA, principal clarinet, Sierra Vista Symphony for a clarinet duet. You will also hear many people’s favorite pieces of music, “The Blue Danube Waltz,” giving us a little taste of Vienna.

All concerts begin at 7:00 pm. There is no admission charge-donations are welcome.
