Paul's Note - December 20, 2019

This is my last update before the Christmas Holiday, so I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and of course a joyous Hanukkah holiday as well.

There’s still some chances to give back to the community this season. The Tucson Roadrunners are once again hosting their annual Teddy Bear Toss this Saturday during their game against the Ontario Reign. Bring a new or unused plush item to the game and toss your teddy bear on the ice after the Roadrunners first goal of the night. All tossed teddy bears (and other plush animals) will be donated to those in need, with a portion going to AVIVA & Easter Seals in Tucson. In addition, the first 1,500 fans will receive a Desert Diamond Casino Hockey Bank upon entry.

I have been assured that no teddy bears will be hurt. This will be far cleaner than hockey traditions in Detroit.

We had a report at this week’s council meeting about Tucson Water’s budget picture. In a future update, I’ll give you more details about that.

One of the things my colleagues and I continue to push is more programs that encourage conservation. There is a way for you to weigh in on this discussion as well.

If you had $100 to fund water conservation programs, how would you spend the money? Where would you prioritize funding? Tucson Water is asking for your input on a water conservation plan to help guide it through the next decade. The utility’s conservation programs are funded by a conservation fee that all customers pay on their bill, which is 10 cents for every 100 cubic feet of potable water used (100 cubic feet equals 748 gallons). Take the survey at this link and see what other customers think.

Our office will be closed on Christmas Day, and we plan to close for the afternoon on Christmas Eve. This will include the water payment window.

As for other services, SunLink is running with a modified schedule throughout the U of A’s winter break. The streetcar now ends service at 10 p.m. on Thursdays and at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The modified schedule does not change the hours of operation from Monday through Wednesday, 7 am - 10 pm, and Sunday, 8 am - 8 pm. SunTran busses will be operating on a Sunday/Holiday schedule on Christmas Day.

There will not be trash collection on Christmas. All customers with collection services on Wednesday-Friday will have their services delayed by one day.
