My colleagues and I haven't made the final decision on what will happen to transit fares after the period of free fares ends on December 31. The discussion isn’t just among members of the council. My staff has had regular meetings with Sun Tran users and we’ve been holding listening sessions with Sun Van riders. I also met with Patrick Robles, the student body president of the University of Arizona, to discuss the concerns of students who are one of the major users of both Sun Tran and Sun Link.
Engagement with the public on this issue is critical. To that end, Sun Tran is hosting an online survey to give all community members the chance to weigh in on the future of transit fares. Feedback from both transit riders and non-riders is essential to help policymakers and City leadership make informed decisions about the future of fares. The online survey opportunity follows a series of public input meetings held in July and August to help community members learn about transit policies and how to access the fares survey. The online survey is available in English and Spanish.
The public also has the option to leave a comment by calling Sun Tran Customer Service at (520) 792-9222 or by emailing suntraninfo@tucsonaz.gov.
Of course, you are also welcome to contact my office to tell me your concerns.

And there is another opportunity for you to weigh in on city policy.
“Zero Waste” is a concept that you’ve probably heard about and our Environmental Services Department (ES) is looking for ways for our community to reach that goal. The Zero Waste International Alliance defines Zero Waste as:
The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse and recovery of all products, packaging, and materials, without burning them and without discharges to land, water or air that threaten the environment or human health.
It is quite a challenging goal. The City of Tucson is taking the first step to Zero Waste by creating a “Roadmap to Zero Waste.” This means ES is developing a guide on what Zero Waste means to Tucson before they develop a Zero Waste Plan. ES wants your feedback on what Zero Waste means to you and Tucson. Take our survey now through September 30 and share it with your Tucson Community. Send them your thoughts today: bit.ly/tucsonzw.

FC Tucson started as a concept in a meeting that we had in my office in 2010. Because I feel a special bond for the team, I’d like to make a pitch for you to support them this weekend. They haven’t had the best season this year but are on a four-match unbeaten streak. If they continue playing at this level, they can make the playoffs and do our community proud.
Saturday’s match is at seven against the Chattanooga Red Wolves. You can watch in person at Kino North Stadium or on ESPN+.
