Tucson Water locks fire hydrants for the following reasons:
- to deter water theft
- to ensure the quality of the water system
- to standardize this program with those of other major Tucson–area water providers
- to secure the water system against potential terrorist threats
Fire hydrants are engineered and installed by Tucson Water primarily for fire department use. An additional benefit of public fire hydrants is that they can be metered and used to temporarily supply construction water.
Licensed contractors can use any Tucson Water fire hydrant, locked or unlocked, through a rented construction meter from Tucson Water. Contractors can also use permitted privately-owned construction meters on any unlocked fire hydrant.
The map on this page provides the general location of our locked hydrants. Tucson Water continues to systematically lock fire hydrants throughout its distribution system. To rent a construction meter, or to check on the status of a particular hydrant, visit New Services at the Tucson Economic Advancement Center, 201 N. Stone Ave. (open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
